from a distance...
amber and ken had known each other during the 1st day of their job orientation. this being their 1st job, both of them shared many moments together. they will dine together at the staff canteen, grumbling about the heavy workload and the disorganised bosses that seem to enjoy seeing them suffer. occasionally they will share a joke and email each other advise to spur the other on.
after the initial probation ken was given the opportunity to transfere to another department. ken and amber had a short discussion and amber encourages ken to plan for his future and seek more advise before making the decision. ken held amber's advise to great esteem and soon after much thoughts and advises ken decided to move on to the other department. it was a more demanding post but with greater prospect. the day that ken left, amber gave him a pat on his back and wished him all the best.
in the initial months ken will still make it a point to contact amber and dine with her whenever possible during lunch. but as work piled up ken had lesser time to spend with amber and soon he was only seen in the staff canteen packing lunch back to his desk. amber began to form her own click as well. their relationship drifted apart and soon they were only "hi, bye" friends, who only meet occassionally in the lift and along the corridors.
amber thought nothing of ken other than a friend and the same for ken. they both felt that stage of their life had simply just pass them by. now is the time for the 2 individuals to pursue the other stuff in their life, careers and different sets of friends.
2 years later, ken was promoted to head the south-east asia team. he was made to station in India with majority of his staff, foreigners to him. amber on the other hand was facing some difficulties working with her new boss and was asking for a transfer to anywhere possible. and as fate would destine it, amber was posted to India to be the personal assistance of the new regional manager there.
amber and ken reunited in India, this time as boss-worker relationship. their lives had changed and status changed. the only thing they had in common, was that they were both of the same ethnic group living among 'foreigners'. amber and ken stayed in their respectively apartment as arranged by the company. however due to the difference in status and rank, their apartments were of different district.
amber and ken maintan a very professional working relationship. although they do joke and chat a little, their relationship was never as good or close as before. 1 afternoon, after a client's lunch curry feast, amber suffered a terrible stomache and was sent into the hospital. amber suffered a great deal from her diahorrea condition and was on constant drip to replace the fluid and electrolytes lost. ken visited her daily and even brought flowers and tonic for amber. being a boss, ken had done 100% and beyond. when amber refused to take her diet, ken will feed her and coax her into eating.
slowly something brew within amber's heart. whenever ken gets a little closer to her, amber will hold her breath and miss a heartbeat. and when ken looks in the direction of amber, she will feel as if being lost into his bluish-green eyes and totally immobilised. when ken's warm hand touches amber's, she will feel a slight current running through her body. that was the feeling that amber had, yet she struggles with it daily. ken was engaged and her boss. although ken had not officially introduced his wife-to-be to the everyone, rumors had it that she was the daughter of one of the company's major shareholder.
as days goes by, amber could hardly contain it anymore. amber decided to change an environment and escape from this endless pit of "suffering". amber tendered in her resignation and ken accepted it without a question asked. in his ever so calm and composed face, he wished amber all the best and asked if she had found a new job, if not he can write a good recommandation letter for her. amber was deversated, as much as she wanted to leave, she was hoping ken will ask her not to leave.
amber finally finished her notice and left the company. she joined a marketing company and soon was in contact with ken again, as her company was taking charge of ken's project-advertising. amber was the key person in charge of all the co-ordination thus she had to contact ken on a semi-regular basis. the fire that amber thought that had died the day she left India, suddenly sparkles and glow in her heart. but amber firmly said NO to it all.
ken never knew what was going on with amber but he suspected amber was in love with someone in the company then. thus he agreed to release amber. ken had always held amber close to his heart as a buddy, one that he could rely on. meeting amber again, after being called back and promoted, ken was excited to fill in the details of his many adventous. but this time amber was as cold as stone towards ken. she had to control herself, as a method of defence. she thought by doing so she will not fall again and thus saving herself from any possible hurt and angish. amber's changed in personality puzzled ken but he took it in good stride. their relation remain purely business with not even side talk.
many years later ken got married but the couple parted ways after 3 months of marriage! amber got involved with a married man was the common marketplace gossip's leading role. they met again, this time as fellow club-members. they smiled and chatted normally as friends, after such a long time! having lots of time to spare with not much committment, amber and ken hang out alot together drinking at the club. once after a glass too much, amber poured out her silly past of how she used to fall for ken. what she did to forget about him and stuff. ken was bluffed by what he heard. weeks that followed that drinking session, ken was extra careful not to meet amber alone as he was afraid.
ken did not know how to handle amber's love for him and he was unsure of what sort of feeling he had towards amber. for the 1st time in his life, ken was unsure and confused. sensing something amiss between herself and ken, amber invited ken to a dinner with her lover. it was her way of telling ken that it was all over and that she is now with another person, its alright. ken, a vice-president of a MNC and amber's lover, a sucessful banker, had much common interest that they literally spent the entire dinner talking non-stop. soon after the dinner, amber's lover had to left as wife (daughter of a hotel owner) was returning from an oversea fashion show.
ken was left with amber alone in the house. under the dim fireplace's glowing light, amber smiled and gestured ken for a dance. they did a number. during the dance amber whispered into ken's ear that its over. he is no-longer her burden to bear and that she is happy where she is. having ken as a friend is better than anything. although she may still wonder how it would had worked out between them if they were to date and married, she reckon seeing him from a distance and wishing him well is the most beautiful and sweetest thing she could and want to do for him.
ken was flattered and at the same time regretted. he had missed out on a lady that he never knew was so in love with himself. before he even could understand what sort of feeling he had for amber, it was stopped short by her telling him that it was all over. in this relationship, amber was the only who had enjoyed and suffered but she is also the only one with all the memories of having it before. ken had nothing but only questions of "what if" and a sure answer of "never will be".
