charmed
beauty lies beneath skin and looks. it is almost like a frangrance, an aroma that is unseen but undenial-ably there. charm often partner with beauty wherever it goes.
what is charm? charm can as simple as a warm handshake, a joyful laughter or a sincere greeting "how are you getting on?". what charms me may not be charming to you.
lingyi was charmed by his authoritive ways in handling a critical situation, he was fast and steady; knowing what he wants and needs but presenting himself with just the right amount of confident that doesn't seems arrgrant. to lingyi that was charming. his eyes glistered with confidence and power. somehow power seems to attract lingyi very much, or was it the confidence factor? lingyi doesn't remember very well now. all she knew was she was attracted to man of power and confidence.
he was a go-getter, he knew when to play the right note. he started as a lowly staff in the company but having the right connection and the right touch on the right persons, he raised to the top within years. he was not merely a man that plays by the strings, he was a man of might, wits and intelligence. he was a real something to everyone who had dealt with him before. of course along the way, he had step on feets and 'accidentally' brush against some shoulders. since his tactful ways makes his enemies admired him of his achievements and ways. he was viewed as the next upcoming biggest thing in the company. his name... Titus, was almost a musical note to every woman in the company, regardless of age, status, looks, weight and height!
lingyi bumped into a sticky situation with her 1st account (client) in her 1st week in the company and titus was the one who came out and settle the entire issue. not only did the client forgave lingyi of her mistake, the client signed another 3 month worth of contract with the company. boasting lingyi's sales 3x above her qouta. titus had not only resuced lingyi of a possible immediate dismissal but charmed her to her core!
1 week after the incident, lingyi saw titus in the lift after work. lingyi thought titus would had forgotten about her, even if he had remembered her would ignored her. but instead titus smile at her and warmly greeted her "how's thing going? it must be scary adjusting to such a big company huh?" lingyi was pleasently shocked. all she could do was smiled back at titus. level 1... the lift door opened and titus held the door open for lingyi out, while he continue to B1 to collect his car. lingyi felt she was walking on clouds! "what a gentleman and gasp! he remembered me!!" she uttered to herself.
once back home, lingyi heard the phone rang. it was kelvin, lingyi's boyfriend. they had been 'seeing' each other for the past 5 years, since their colleage years. lingyi graduated from colleage and started working but kelvin left and continued his post-degree education oversea. the only means of them communicating was via the phone and internet. their only chance of physical connection was the only time when kelvin would return during the annual thanksgiving. but even then kelvin will only stay for 3 days and spend most of his time with his parents.
although lingyi did not personally knew titus, she felt that she was falling for him! so when kelvin called, lingyi wasn't very interested in talking to kelvin. she spoke coldly to him and deliberating gave the excuse of being tired and cut short the telephone conversation. for the next few weeks, kelvin was experiencing such treatment and he kept wondering what was wrong. he reflected upon himself and wonder was it because he wasn't spending enough time with lingyi or was it because he wasn't romantic enough. to make up for that kelvin arranged for flowers to be delivered to lingyi's company and tried even hard to call and talk to lingyi more. but all these sweet gestures where met with angry screams over the phone demanding him to stop all these childish act immediately. innocent kelvin took the blows one by one but held on fast to his position as lingyi's boyfriend and never wavier once.
lingyi never managed to get to talk to titus more than the "hi" and "bye" even though they were in the same company. afterall they were of different department and level! still lingyi remained as smithed by him as she was since that day.
3 months later... lingyi had a car accident. she was hitted by a truck. her shoulder was dislocated and the bone of her hand fractured. lucky for her no stiches were needed and she was not disfigured in any ways. during her 2 months hospitalisation leave. kelvin ordered flowers to be delivered to lingyi almost daily and called her 3x a day to ensure she was not bored to death in the hospital. although no physically present, kelvin supported lingyi emotionally and spiritually. lingyi poured out all her worries and fears to kelvin and they talked and prayed it through. at the end of the 2 months, lingyi's bone had healed perfectly and her shoulder was fine. no more physiotherapy was needed and she was back to her 100%.
it was during this time that she recalled that during the time of her recovery was actually the time when kelvin was preparing for his final thesis and presentation for his post-degree paper. instead of mugging for his paper and being self-absorbed in his situation, kelvin had extended his arms for her. she was deeply touched. being a genius (as lingyi always teased him as), kelvin managed to do well in his studies and returned home, in awaiting for his graduation ceremony.
waiting to fetch kelvin at the airport with his family, lingyi realised that the charm that titus had over her was pale in comparison to the love that kelvin showered her with. (what is that 5 minutes of charms in comparison to this steady 5 years of relationship?!) lingyi smile in great delight as she spot her dear kelvin coming out from the immgiration. all that had happened made lingyi realised that waves may come crashing on this love-boat of hers and kelvin but with a strong anchor they will never fall nor dift off course.
